AUGUST IS FULL OF NOTEWORTHY DAYS
August 4th is celebrated as Coast
Guard Day to honor the establishment of the Revenue
Cutter Service, forebear of today's Coast Guard, by
the Treasury Department. The 6th of August marks the day in 1945 when the first atomic bomb was dropped in an attempt to end the war. August 14th is V-J day, or Victory over Japan Day, celebrating Emperor Hirohito's announcement of Japan's surrender. National Aviatioon Day is August 19th, established by a presidential proclamation in 1939, which designated the anniversary of Orville Wright's birthday to be National Aviation Day. |
